Nature photography has become a passion for Jon Root. He believes that “…beauty is all around us. Finding the unusual and striking requires persistence and a presence in nature. The landscape changes continuously, giving one an infinite amount of photographic possibilities. Photographing wild animals is a real treat, and I find that they are as curious about us humans as we are of them. If you give them the space they need to be comfortable, they pose for you.”
Recently retired as an emeritus director and professor of Communication Media from Oregon State University, a Major General in the Army Reserve, and a vice president for an innovative startup company, he is now pursuing a combination of interests in the out-of-doors, including photography and artistic expression. With a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art, Master of Science Degree in Broadcast Communications, and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Curriculum and Instruction, he is once again fully engaged in his interest in the visual media.
After retirement from academic, military, and corporate activities, Jon and his wife Kay have been fulfilling their desire to travel widely. Photographically recording points of interest during their travels is key to the development of his portfolio. Striking landscapes and wild animals from throughout the country including from many of our national parks, and points of interest from the rest of the world create the backdrop for Root’s photography. Residing in the Puget Sound amid its outstanding beauty also provides a great foundation for Jon’s creations.
